Qualification Description

This qualification reflects the role of individuals in a variety of Business Services job roles. These individuals may have general management accountabilities.

Individuals in these roles carry out complex tasks in a specialist field of expertise. They may undertake technical research and analysis, and will often contribute to setting the strategic direction for a work area. The qualification is suited to individuals who are responsible for the supervision and leadership of a team or work area (including by managing staff performance and making staffing decisions).

Five (5) five core and five (5) elective units are required for the award of the BSB60120 Advanced Diploma of Business. Units have been selected in accordance with the packaging rules and are relevant to the work outcome, local industry requirements and qualification level.

Learner Characteristics and Target

Target groups for the BSB60120 Advanced Diploma of Business are international students who are:

  • Seeking to pursue a career in business.
  • Seeking to enter a new industry sector.
  • Seeking a pathway to higher-level qualifications.
  • Characteristics of the target group are as follows:

Students will usually be new entrants. However, credit and/or RPL can be provided for those with existing skills and knowledge allowing such students to complete the course in a shorter timeframe.

Students will be from a range of countries and may be living in Australia for the first time or may have been here in the recent or more distant past.

Many will speak English as a second language, although an entry level has been set to ensure students are able to complete course work.

Students are expected to typically fall into the age range of 18 – 35 as people still establishing or changing careers.


Student may chose to complete BSB50120 Diploma in Business and other relevant qualification/s prior to compencing this qualification.

After successful completion of BSB60120 Advanced Diploma in Business, candidate may consider undertaking Graduate Diploma Level Qualification or any other Graduate Diploma level quaification in the Business Services Training Package

Course Credit

Students may apply for recognition of existing qualifications or skills, knowledge, and experience (credit transfer or recognition of prior learning). The granting of course credit may affect course fees as well as the duration of the course.

Total number of units required for the qualification will be ten (10) including five (5) core units plus five (5) elective units. The units that VSA will be delivering and assessing are provided below;

Qualification and Statement of Attainment

Students will be required to achieve competency in Ten (10) units of competency (UOC) to successfully achieve qualification of BSB60120 Advanced Diploma of Business. A completion that is less than ten (10) successful UOC will result in the issuance of a Statement.

Fees for the Qualification

The total fee for the qualification includes:

  • Enrolment fee: $250 (non-refundable)
  • Tuition fees: $14,750 (this includes all course materials)

Vocational Skills Australia does not require international students to pay more than 50% of course fees prior to course commencement. However, Vocation Education Training Australia provides students with the opportunity to pay more than 50% of their tuition fees prior to course commencement if they wish. Generally fees are payable in equal installments and the dates and amounts are included in the Course Acceptance Agreement.

Delivery and Assessment Overview

The qualification is delivered over 65 weeks comprising of:

  • Six (6) terms of 10 weeks each (60 weeks total)
  • Holiday breaks amounting to 18 weeks (as specified in the timetable)

Students are required to attend 20 hours of classroom training per week.

The training and assessment schedule shows the weeks during which training is delivered and assessment conducted for each unit.

The total amount of training provided being structured classroom sessions is 800 hours. Time scheduled for assessment in class is 400 hours. Homework which is unsupervised and may include research for assessments and general reading is expected to be on average 5 hours a week.

Total delivery and assessment hours therefore amount to 1200 hours and the volume of learning (i.e. including unsupervised learning of homework) is 1,500 hours. A detailed breakdown of hours is provided in the Training and Assessment Schedule.

VSA operates a system of rolling enrolments meaning that students may commence at the beginning of any unit. Students may enter the qualification after any unit, as there are no pre-requisites for any units. The Training and Assessment Schedule is shown in terms, and this represents the scheduling of units on commencement. However, depending on when a student joins the course, the term number will vary.

VSA has decided on the course duration and amount of training considering the AQF Volume of Learning, which is typically 18 months – 2 years and 1800 – 2400 hours. It is considered that the duration and amount of training provided will allow international students the opportunity to fully absorb the required knowledge, as well as develop skills over time. This amount is not reduced to account for existing competencies, as most learners will not have any prior relevant experience. However, where learners have prior skills and knowledge, they may apply for RPL or credit transfer, which will reduce the course duration if granted.

Student Cohort

Our target cohort will be recent graduates from VSA completed Diploma of Business or any other Diploma/Advanced Diploma in BSB trainng package from any other CRICOS provider and will not have had any workplace experience, specially within Australian context.

All our students for this qualification will be international students who want to gain an Advanced Diploma of Business qualification as pathway for further learning. This qualification will assist students to gain knowledge and skills required for Business Development Manager and/or Business Analyst.

Entry Requirements

Entry requirements include:

  • Students must be aged 18 years or above
  • Completed Year 12 or equivalent
  • Completed BSB40215 Certificate IV in Business from VSA or from any other CRICOS provider.
  • LLN test CSPA (Core Skills Profile for Adults) from ACER
  • Have completed a diploma or advanced diploma from the BSB training package OR have to years equivalent full-time relevant work place experience in an operational or leadership role in an enterprise

All students must bring laptop in all classes, workshops and orientation with MS office 2013 or newer version. All students are informed of the entry requirements prior to commencing a course through comprehensive brochures and marketing information. VSA’s enrolment procedure ensures students meet this requirement.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Students are able to have their competency from prior learning and work experience recognized in this qualification through the following arrangements:

VSA will provide RPL guides and documentation to Students that explains the entire process. RPL is the acknowledgement of skills and knowledge obtained through formal or informal training, Work and life experiences.

  • If a student has previously completed training or has course-related skills and experience, he or she may be eligible for RPL.
  • Applications for RPL will be assessed on an individual basis. Each applicant will need to provide the necessary documentation.Documentation of prior learning is the most common form of evidence, however there are other forms of evidence including: third party observations, self-assessment reviews, verbal questioning, phone interviews and real work samples such as log books, lesson plans, meeting minutes etc. RPL applications must be assessed as early as possible.

All evidence documents will be assessed against the following rules of evidence:

  • Validity
  • Authenticity
  • Currency
  • Sufficiency
  • RPL and course credit may reduce the duration of a student’s enrolment. RPL applications must be assessed as early as possible.

The following Learning Resources will be available free of cost to students enabling them to absorb the required skills and knowledge:

  • Learning Resources from RTO works
  • Supplementary resources including articles / web references / workplace policies, procedures and sample documents (material provided as handout / link / reference)
  • Reference books such as Leadership and Managment: Theory and Practice 7th edition by Kris Cole
  • PowerPoint/handouts.

Credit Transfer

Students may also apply for a credit transfer upon enrolment and this may reduce their course duration, refer VSA recognition of prior learning and credit transfer policy and procedure.
